Coping with Mood Lows During Weight Loss: Scientific Methods to Reboot Your Motivation

2026-03-26

When people experience feelings of "Oh no, I can't go on," or "I've reached my limit," they inevitably get trapped in these negative thoughts. At times like these, look at your past records.

"I've worked hard for ×× months, lost ×× kilograms, and lost ×× kilograms every month..." These objective statistics will give you incredible encouragement.

This is because people in a low mood absolutely underestimate their efforts and achievements. It's this underestimation that leads to low spirits. But by reviewing your records, your past efforts—the magnitude and speed of weight loss—will be vividly clear. The irrefutable evidence prevents you from underestimating your efforts.

I myself often look at my past records when I'm feeling down.

"Wow! My weight has been consistently decreasing by 1 kilogram per week!"

Of course, I'm actually aware of these figures; I just want to relive the feeling of successfully losing weight. The thought, "Losing 1 kg every week for 8 weeks straight, I'm amazing!" instantly lifted my spirits. I've never felt so strongly that "choosing the record-keeping weight loss method was truly a good decision."

Moreover, after reviewing my records for several months, I truly understood the effort I had put in. How could a little anxiety or pain possibly negate all that hard work?

It's easy to let others down, but we don't easily betray our own hard-earned achievements. Even the most unreliable and irresponsible person values their own efforts.

Imagine how devastated and frustrated you would be if you lost all your saved data from a computer game. The fact that a game could cause such a blow proves that no creature fears losing its hard work and time more than humans.

However, influenced by the "precursors to change on day 75" and the anxiety of "having reached a plateau," I unknowingly fell into a low mood of "I don't seem to be losing weight anymore" and "I'm giving up," even considering giving up altogether.

Whenever this happened, I would look at my previous records and think: "If this continues, all my previous efforts will be wasted; I can't give up!"

Whenever you feel it's too hard, whenever you want to give up, please be sure to look at your previous records again.

Since I've reviewed the records again, I'll use the past data to calculate my body fat percentage and try to create a chart every week.

Body fat percentage, as I've coined the term, is a simple calculation using "body weight × body fat percentage." It's the weight of fat in your body. The goal of weight loss is to reduce body fat percentage as much as possible.
